First International Conference
of
Interpreters and Translators in Myanmar

December 6, 2016
Summit Parkview Hotel
Yangon, Myanmar

The main objective of the First International Conference of Interpreters and Translators in Myanmar: “Empowering Myanmar’s Development through Interpreting and Translation” is to create a platform for interpreters and translators, as well as public sector, private sector, NGOs and international institutions representatives in Myanmar to share their knowledge, experience and opinion on the future of oral and written translation language services in Myanmar.   The speakers at the conference represented:

  1. Interpreters and Translators
  2. Academia
  3. Government and Public Sector
  4. International Development Institutions
  5. KKSIT Student Representatives

One of the issues discussed during this conference was the challenges awaiting the interpreting and translation sector in Myanmar, following significant changes in domestic political landscape after the elections in November 2015.  Secondly, an essential question raised during the conference was the expectations of public sector, private business sector, NGOs and international institutions based in Myanmar towards interpreting and translation service providers. Thirdly, the notion of establishing interpreting and translation profession in Myanmar was discussed, whereby standards, rights and duties of language professionals were proposed.

An important part of the discussion should be devoted to the work conditions of interpreters in Myanmar, i.e. the ideas on how to solve the lack of interpreting booths, proper technical equipment for interpreting, as well as regulating interpreters' work-time (especially in  case of simultaneous interpreting where interpreters should not interpret longer than 20-25 minutes at a turn and should preferably work together with a partner in a booth in order to switch after some intervals of time).

Within the above specified frames, there are altogether seven topics that the speakers were able to
choose from:

  1. History of interpreting/translation studies in Myanmar
  2. Challenges awaiting interpreting sector in Myanmar
  3. Challenges awaiting translation sector in Myanmar
  4. Training of future interpreters and translators in Myanmar
  5. Interpreting/translation services from the perspective of public sector, private business sector, NGOs and international institutions representatives
  6. Interpreting/translation from/into the local ethnic languages
  7. Community interpreting (in the court, in the hospital, at the police station, at the border control) in Myanmar
